The Marguerite Duras association was born in 1997, from the author's links to the Pays de Duras.
Marguerite Duras' father was from Lot-et-Garonne. A professor, he left to teach in Indochina where Marguerite was born in 1914. In 1921, ill, he returned to France and bought a house near Duras, Platier, in which he died prematurely. Marguerite, her mother and her two brothers, came to live in this house from 1922 to 1924 then in 1931 for the sale of the estate.
In 1943 Marguerite Duras published her first novel: Les Impudents. When it was published, she left Donnadieu, her father's name, and adopted Duras as her writer's name.
The association created the Marguerite Duras Center-Museum in Duras where permanent exhibitions are open. It organizes the Biennales in even years and the Marguerite Duras Meetings in odd years.
Current exhibition: “All my life I have written”.
