Ahhh, I love this place! In the shade of the plane trees, exploring the rich heritage of the villages bordering it, green, calm and relaxing, the Garonne canal, is certainly less famous than its “big brother” the canal du midi but frankly, he has nothing to be ashamed of!
From Toulouse to Castets-en-Dorthe near Langon, passing through Agenais and of course the Val de Garonne, you can enjoy it on foot, by bike on its greenway or by boat.
2 years ago, I tested the thermal boats on the canal – rented to Emerald Location – located at the Pont des Sables nautical stop (10 minutes from Marmande). Xavier, the manager is very friendly and always accommodating.
No need to have a boat license to operate them, after 5-10 minutes briefing, let's go for a peaceful stroll on the canal. I had a great time with my friends and we took the opportunity to take a refreshing break at the Community bar along the canal in Fourques-sur-Garonne.
Last year, with my family, I tested the pedalos (my daughter was too young for canoeing)! A nice way to take a stroll on the canal in complete safety thanks to their stability.
Two pedalers and two passengers (we turned because everyone wanted to try pedaling!) equipped with our life jackets, we set off for 2 hours on a pedal float. A gentle mode of travel that allows you to appreciate the smoothness of the channel, to pass barges and say “hello” to greenway cyclists. It is very enjoyable to go pedal boating, even during the hot summer months, because the canal is relatively always shady and you don't have to be very sporty to ride a pedal boat. It’s an activity that reflects the region: to be done in “slow” mode, ideal between friends or family.
I have already had the opportunity to test the paddle, still on the canal but departing from the nautical stop of Meilhan sur Garonne, another spot not to be missed! “Play and sleep in the garden” , a leisure center located along the canal, offers them for rental.
